Oxford Who's Who 2009

Who's Who 2009 is now available online. This 161st annual edition of the renowned big red book published in print by A&C Black since 1897, and now published online by Oxford University Press, includes more than 1,000 new entries, celebrating those whose achievements are notable in today's British society.

NEW LIVES FOR 2009
Craig...Daniel Wroughton Craig is one of the new figures selected to have an autobiography available in the latest edition of Who's Who, now joining his James Bond predecessors Sean Connery, Roger Moore, and Pierce Brosnan in the publication. Also included in the update are autobiographies for Joanne Elvin, Editor of Glamour magazine, actor Rob Brydon (Little Britain, 2005; Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, 1998), Pink Floyd member David Gilmour, and New Scientist editor Dr. Roger Highfield, who notes that he enjoys Wii boxing, making him one of the first entrants to list the Wii as a recreation in Who's Who. Last but not least, Barack Obama is now dutifully included in this very important database of autobiographies.

FUN FACTS

As a treat, below is a list of the most searched-for names in the online edition of Who's Who since January 2008, alongside a list of the ten most read entries in Who Was Who since January 2008.

EBSCO Announces New NoveList Functionality

You will soon have the ability to simply, conveniently limit your searches directly from the NoveList home page, using radio buttons. For example, limit your searches by author, title, series or plot by clicking on the appropriate radio button and entering your search term(s) in the Find field. To view examples of the new buttons, click here.

Of course, if you would like to see all of NoveList's robust content associated with a given author, title etc., you can still enter your term(s) in the Find field without clicking on a radio button. Your results will include all of the book titles, Author Read-alikes, Recommended Reads and other articles and lists that are associated with your search term(s).

The development of this exciting enhancement was based upon requests from NoveList customers, gathered from the NoveList customer forum discussion at ALA, customer survey results and emails. EBSCO is listening, and they thank you for your continued use and support of NoveList. If you have any questions, please contact EBSCO at novelist@ebscohost.com

Teen Health and Wellness: Real Life, Real Answers Online Database Selected by Leading Urban School Districts

Chicago, Denver, Oakland, and Milwaukee Recognize Teen Health and Wellness as a Critical Tool for Students, Teachers, and Health Services Staff

NEW YORK CITY, NY – August 4, 2008 – Rosen Publishing is pleased to announce the selection of Teen Health & Wellness: Real Life, Real Answers by several urban school districts for integration into health, fitness, and family life curricula and as a reference and support resource for their middle and high school students. Chicago Public Schools (IL), Denver Public Schools (CO), Oakland Unified School District (CA), and Milwaukee Public Schools (WI) join a growing list of over 2,000 public and private schools and public libraries across the country that recognize Teen Health & Wellness as an important self-help and homework help tool for their communities.

“When Chicago Public Schools was introduced to the Teen Health & Wellness database from Rosen, we were impressed with the quality and variety of the information, the look of the Web site, and the ease of navigation,” states Paul Whitsitt, director of libraries and information services at Chicago Public Schools. “Our health education experts enthusiastically approved the content, and we saw that it would meet student needs for both school assignments and personal exploration.” Over 100,000 Chicago secondary students will have access to Teen Health & Wellness when the 2008-2009 school year begins.

Ann Mayo Gallagher, district librarian, reports that after weeks of input from site librarians using a trial subscription, Oakland Unified School District decided to subscribe to Teen Health & Wellness for its 37 middle schools and high schools. “It is a great product that will be used to fill a niche in the information market that teens need and want,” states Gallagher. “The price is affordable, the interface is inviting, the teacher resources are well done, and the possibilities are all there to support quality information searching. It will be great having this resource for our students.”

Since Teen Health & Wellness launched in 2007, Rosen Publishing continues to add features to the award-winning database, most recently including customizable Hotlines, RSS feed capability, and expanded reading lists. Teen Health & Wellness has received critical acclaim and won numerous awards, including being voted a 2007 Top 10 Digital Resource by School Library Journal and a "Must Have" Product for Fall 2008, being selected as one of Library Journal’s Best Reference Sources of 2007, and being named Best New Product, 2007 Readers’ Choice Awards by The Charleston Advisor. The database has also been honored with an EDDIE (Annual Education Software Review) Award, an Association of Educational Publishers (AEP) Distinguished Achievement Award, a World Wide Web Health Award, and a Best Educational Software (BESSIE) Award.

New on WilsonWeb - Biography Index Retrospective (1946-1983)

Library users can now search more than 40 years of Wilson's classic biographical resource Biography Index in a single, easy-to-use database. With citations on people from antiquity through 1980s headline-makers, Biography Index Retrospective brings convenient WilsonWeb searching to the in-depth data that earned Biography Index decades of popularity as a print reference.

Researchers will find coverage of notables across all disciplines and subject areas: writers, artists, statesmen, sports figures, politicians, religious leaders, scientists, educators, military leaders, teachers, actors, business people, and more. A cross-section of the database unearths more than 18,000 profiles of painters worldwide, back to the 19th century; nearly 12,000 profiles of generals, from Douglas MacArthur to Hannibal; 5,000 profiles of physicists, from Isaac Newton to Stephen Hawking; more than 21,000 profiles of poets, from James Joyce to Sonia Sanchez; more than 3,100 profiles of pianists; almost 10,000 profiles of state governors back as far as the 1940s; more than 120 profiles of race car drivers, and much more.

Access by subject, author, publication year, publication name and issue (plus a wide array of other fields), makes Biography Index Retrospective a great tool for research not only on prominent individuals, but also on attitudes toward these individuals in specific media outlets, in specific eras, and by specific authors. Updated terms for professions allow searching using contemporary language, and name variations are reconciled, ensuring thorough research throughout the decades of coverage and multitude of sources.

Gentle Reads, and Their Opposite - From Reader's Advisor Online

Laura Calderone of Libraries Unlimited, a Greenwood Publishing Group member, writes in her recent update e-mail:

"At the monthly [Reader's Advisor Online] webinars, Sarah [Statz Cords] and I frequently hear requests to find gentle reads or reads without certain kinds of content. Our editorial team has been discussing this and we are expanding the use of Gentle Reads and Inspirational as subject terms; and are proposing to add new subject tags for Strong Language, Explicit Sexuality and Explicit Violence. This would cover the extremes, but not attempt to "rate" each book. Would this help you meet the needs of your patrons? We'd like to discuss this on the Blog; we will have a posting on this topic soon. You can also email me directly at laura.calderone@lu.com. The point is not censorship, but to match readers and books! Readers and readers' advisors (or librarians) already have their own techniques for identifying appropriate reading, and we want to make it easier for them."

You can post your thoughts on the Reader's Advisor Online Blog soon http://www.readersadvisoronline.com/blog/index.php, or, as mentioned, contact Laura directly.

OVID's new interface and how to get stats

The Ovid Web Gateway platform will be retired on February 4th; OVID databases will transition to OvidSP.

The OvidSP WebStats interface (https://ovidspstats.ovid.com) is now live. You can now generate statistical reports that track and monitor all of your institution’s usage on OvidSP since the platform went live on October 25, 2007. (Please note that Ovid Gateway usage stats will be collected until the switchover to OvidSP; access to historical Gateway usage stats at http://ovid-admin.ovid.com/stats2/ will be available after February 4th).

To access the OvidSP WebStats interface and begin viewing your reports, simply create a username and password (these must be different from your Gateway stats username and password) by completing and submitting an online request form, located at http://www.ovid.com/site/trial/webstats_osp/index.jsp.

OvidSP usage statistics reports are COUNTER-compliant! Click here for more information about the COUNTER organization and its standards. Ovid is a COUNTER member.

Be sure to visit the OvidSP Resource Center for training sessions, screenshots, Frequently Asked Questions, a User Guide, and more. If you have questions or feedback on the new platform, please contact us or Bob Morrisey or support@ovid.com.

New on WilsonWeb - Business Periodicals Index Retrospective: 1913-1982

H.W. Wilson has announced the debut of the new WilsonWeb reference database Business Periodicals Index Retrospective: 1913-1982. A detailed index of the content of more than 1,000 business periodicals back to the first World War, this is perhaps the most in-depth, authentic record of 20th century business and industry found in any single source. With versatile WilsonWeb searching of more than 2.5 million articles, the database helps researchers compile vivid portraits of historical business trends, events, people, and innovations, complete with insights that only contemporaneous journalism can offer.

From the history of telecommunications, to the events that led to the Great Depression; from world trade with the Soviet Union, to the shaping of the modern oil industry, this is a rich account of technological advances, business strategies, marketing triumphs and failures, corporate cultures, politics and regulation, iconic executives, and much more. Access to facts and statistics from a multitude of sources, opinion pieces from diverse observers and interests, forecasts from respected prognosticators, and other journalistic insights make this unique resource valuable to students of a wide range of industries as well as researchers in a wide range of disciplines. This is a practical tool for study in business, history, sociology, economics, politics, law, and other fields.

The database covers the full range of business specialties--accounting to advertising, computers to cosmetics, economics to entertainment, taxes to transportation. Updated subject headings make finding information easy, though historical subject headings are provided (and are searchable), for insight into the evolution of methods and technology. Personal and corporate names used as subject headings are standardized, to ensure retrieval of all records about an individual or a company.

Business Periodicals Index Retrospective searches seamlessly with Wilson Business Full Text, offering nearly a century of data combined. Free 30-day trials are available at www.hwwilson.com/trial.
